आख़िर इस दर्द की दवा क्या है

O innocent heart, what has happened to you

What is the medicine for this pain

हम हैं मुश्ताक़ और वो बे-ज़ार 

या इलाही ये माजरा क्या है 

I am anxious and eager, she is cold and aloof

Oh God, what is this state

मैं भी मुँह में ज़बान रखता हूँ 

काश पूछो कि मुद्दआ' क्या है 

I too have a tongue in my mouth (I too have an opinion)

If only someone asks what's the matter/ issue

जब कि तुझ बिन नहीं कोई मौजूद 

फिर ये हंगामा ऐ ख़ुदा क्या है

When no one exists without you

Then what is this commotion, Oh God

ये परी-चेहरा लोग कैसे हैं 

ग़म्ज़ा ओ इश्वा ओ अदा क्या है 

What are these beautiful angelic-faced women like?

What are all the airs and graces about? (their amorous glances, their coquettishness and their enticing style)

शिकन-ए-ज़ुल्फ़-ए-अंबरीं क्यूँ है 

निगह-ए-चश्म-ए-सुरमा सा क्या है

Why do these fragrant curls exist? (referring to a woman’s tresses)

What is the meaning of the glance of your eyes lined with kohl?

सब्ज़ा ओ गुल कहाँ से आए हैं 

अब्र क्या चीज़ है हवा क्या है

Where has this beautiful greenery and nature come from?

What is this cloud and the wind?

हम को उन से वफ़ा की है उम्मीद

जो नहीं जानते वफ़ा क्या है 

I hope for faith from one

Who doesn’t know what it means to be faithful

हाँ भला कर तिरा भला होगा 

और दरवेश की सदा क्या है 

Yes, do good, and good will come to you

What, but this does the beggar/ saint say?

जान तुम पर निसार करता हूँ 

मैं नहीं जानता दुआ क्या है 

I am willing to sacrifice my life for you

I do not know what else is prayer

मैं ने माना कि कुछ नहीं 'ग़ालिब' 

मुफ़्त हाथ आए तो बुरा क्या है 

I agree that ‘Ghalib’ is ‘nothing’,

But what harm does it do, if you get him for ‘nothing’

मुश्ताक़ - eager/ desirous

बे-ज़ार - weary/ tired of

परी-चेहरा - beautiful/ angelic-faced

ग़म्ज़ा - an amorous glance or wink 

इश्वा - coquetry/ ogling

अदा - an enticing style or a tempting gesture (generally by women)

शिकन-ए-ज़ुल्फ़-ए-अंबरीं - curls in musky tresses

निगह-ए-चश्म-ए-सुरमा - glance of kohl rimmed eyes

सब्ज़ा ओ गुल - plants and flowers

अब्र - cloud

दरवेश - beggar/ saint

सदा - shout/ sound of a beggar

निसार - sacrifice/ offering

Dil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai

Aakhir is dard ki dawa kya hai

Ham hain mushtaaq aur woh bezaar

Ya ilaahee ! Yeh maajra kya hai ?

Main bhi muh me zabaan rakhata hun

Kaash puchho ki mudda kyaa hai

Jab ki tujh bin nahi koyi maujood

Fir ye hangaama, ‘ei khuda ! Kya hai

Ye pari chehra log kaise hain

Gamaza-o-ishwa-o-ada kya hai

Shikan-e-zulf-e-ambari kyon hai

Nigah-e-chashm-e-surma sa kya hai

Sabz-o-gul kahaan se aaye hai

Abr kyaa chiz hai, hava kyaa hai

Hum ko un se wafa ki hai ummeed

Jo nahin jante wafa kya hai

Haan bhala kar, tera bhala hoga

Aur daravesh ki sadaa kyaa hai

Jaan tum par nisaar karta hoon

Main naheen janta dua kya hai

Maine maana ki kuchh nahi “Ghalib”

Muft haath aaye, to bura kyaa hai
